Narrative

East Carolina University (hereafter, ECU or the institution) awards undergraduate academic credit for course work taken on a noncredit basis only when there is documentation that the noncredit work is equivalent to a designated credit experience.

ECU awards college credit for specific examination results.  ECU applicants who present acceptable scores on advanced placement examinations (AP) of The College Board may be given credit or advanced placement in the appropriate subject matter areas. Applicants who complete an international baccalaureate high school degree may receive college credit for courses approved by the institution. Credit may also be given for acceptable performance in the appropriate subject matter areas on both the general examination and subject examinations of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Defense Activity Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES).  The academic unit offering the credit determines the amount of the credit to be given for the CLEP or DANTES exams.  Academic credit may be awarded for military experiences.  Students who have satisfactorily completed basic military training may receive credit for HLTH 1000 and one hour of exercise (EXSS) upon submitting a Defense Department Form 214 (DD214), Sailor/Marine Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART) or Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) transcript to the Office of the Registrar.  Students who have completed service schools while on active duty with the military may request an evaluation through the Office of the Registrar.  In accordance with Faculty Senate Resolution #04-20, the Office of the Registrar submits military experience, along with the American Council on Education (ACE) recommendation to the appropriate department. Credit is awarded only upon the recommendation and review of the department faculty.

The ECU Office of Admissions maintains the website where information concerning the allotment of credit is provided for students, and updates the site upon receipt of information from the various units offering the credits at ECU. When students are awarded credit for examinations, the university does not consider this to be awarding noncredit for credit. A summary table of fall 2010 to spring 2012 of credits awarded for CLEP, DANTES, Military, and AP experiences is attached as documentation.

ECU is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.4.8, as this narrative has demonstrated that the institution only awards credit for prior course work taken on noncredit basis when the institution has been provided with documentation verifying that the noncredit course is equivalent to a designated credit experience.
