Compliance Judgment:  In compliance

Narrative

As stated in the Academic Requirements for Degrees and Minors in the 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog, “A degree from East Carolina University (hereafter, ECU or the institution) comprises a minimum of 120 semester hours. A minimum of 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree and at least 50 percent of the total hours required in the major discipline must be completed through enrollment in East Carolina University.”

To ensure compliance with the ECU policy for institutional credit, staff members in the registrar’s office and in each college/school monitor compliance during the degree audit/certification process for each student who applies for graduation.  The Office of the Registrar posts The Undergraduate Graduation Process for Advisors that outlines the process for graduation audit and for The Undergraduate Graduation Process for Students, both including the Senior Summary FormEach college/school/department has developed a process to ensure that each candidate for graduation has met the stated baccalaureate degree requirements (see example from the College of Business Advising Center).  Graduation Requirements in the 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog include the statement that “Every student should confer with his or her academic advisor and/or the major department/school administrator or designee about program and degree requirements. At least two semesters prior to graduation, each student must, in consultation with the unit administrator or designee, complete a graduation requirements review (also called a senior summary) in consultation with their advisor and complete the application for graduation that is available in the Office of the Registrar and departmental offices.” These processes ensure that graduates of East Carolina University meet the requirements for institutional credits for all degrees awarded.

East Carolina University transcripts clearly distinguish between courses completed at this institution and those taken at other institutions and accepted for ECU degree credit. The online tools available to faculty and staff advisors (Banner) also clearly distinguish transfer credit hours from resident credit hours. The attached unofficial transcript shows how transfer courses are identified on an ECU transcript, which also includes transfer equivalencies. The unofficial transcripts are available online through Banner Self-Service for students and advisors.

In summary, East Carolina University ensures that at least 25 percent of the credit hours awarded for an undergraduate degree are earned through instruction offered by the institution.
