The institution publishes a clear and appropriate statement of student rights and responsibilities and disseminates the statement to the campus community.

Compliance Judgment: In compliance

As an academic community, East Carolina University (hereafter, ECU or the institution) is dedicated to providing a safe and vibrant learning and working environment for all its members. As members of the ECU community, students have the right to be treated with respect and consideration, have freedom of inquiry, and have reasonable use of services and facilities. All students are responsible for conducting themselves in a manner that helps to foster an environment of learning in which the rights, dignity, worth, and freedom of each member of the academic community are respected. Upon acceptance of admission to ECU, each student agrees to abide by the policies of the institution and to conduct her/himself on- and off-campus in a manner consistent with published statements of student rights and responsibilities. The Student Code of Conduct covers all non-academic matters, the East Carolina Creed presents the guiding principles of the institution to the student body, and the Academic Integrity Policy covers academic matters.

Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities: The Student Code of Conduct

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) administers the student conduct process, as articulated in ECU’s Student Code of Conduct. The Student Code of Conduct fosters student growth by promoting students’ awareness and understanding of their own rights and responsibilities as community members and their obligation to respect the rights of other students. The OSRR addresses student conduct and creates developmental learning opportunities in an effort to engage students in ethical decision-making. The Student Code of Conduct  and related policies govern student behavior and clarify both rights and responsibilities in and out of the classroom for all students from the time they accept admission to ECU until completion of academic requirements and/or graduation.

The East Carolina Creed

Students are expected to behave in a manner that demonstrates integrity and respect for others and the campus environment. As a means of articulating such guiding principles, the University has adopted The East Carolina Creed, which states:

In the pursuit of educational excellence, responsible stewardship, and intellectual freedom, the community of scholars at East Carolina University is committed to learning at the highest level. Founded in the tradition of service and leadership, members of our academic society exemplify high standards of professional and personal conduct at all times.

As an East Carolinian,

I will carry out personal and academic integrity.

I will respect and appreciate the diversity of our people, ideas, and opinions.

I will be thoughtful and responsible in my words and actions.

I will engage in purposeful citizenship by serving as a positive role model.

Adherence to these moral principles is the obligation of every East Carolinian on- and off-campus. In doing so, our individual freedom to learn and a pledge to serve will be preserved.

Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities: Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a cornerstone value of the intellectual community at East Carolina University. Academic integrity ensures that students derive optimal benefit from their educational experience and their pursuit of knowledge and prepares students to enter the world beyond the academy with the highest standards of ethics and responsible citizenship. Violating the principle of academic integrity damages the reputation of the institution and undermines its educational mission. Without the assurance of integrity in academic work (including research) degrees from the university lose value, and the world beyond campus (graduate schools, employers, colleagues, neighbors, etc.) learns that it cannot trust credits or a diploma earned at ECU. For these reasons, academic integrity is required of every ECU student.

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) is responsible for managing the academic integrity process and ensuring that information related to the academic integrity policy is available to students, as found in the academic integrity policy for students. The OSRR also provides information related to the academic integrity policy for faculty; the academic integrity policy is developed by the Faculty Senate and is available in the Faculty Manual and other locations as listed below.

Administration and Communication of Statements of Student Rights and Responsibilities

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) is designated as the administrative unit responsible for dealing with alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct. Violations are managed through the OSRR judicial process. The ECU Creed, the Student Code of Conduct, and the Academic Integrity Policy are communicated to students and the University community in multiple ways:

Standards of Individual Programs

In addition to institutional standards, several units on campus hold students accountable to additional discipline-related standards for behavior. For example, the Brody School of Medicine has a Student Code of Conduct that is unique to students within that school. Provisions for the rights of students residing in University housing are stated in the Campus Living Resident Handbook which sets forth residential community standards. Violations of these specific unit-established codes are adjudicated at the unit level.

This narrative has demonstrated that ECU is in compliance with comprehensive standard 3.9.1 as it has provided examples and documentation of ECU’s students’ rights.
